Labor Day

Labor Day occurs on the first Monday of September. Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. The labor movement created it in the late 19th century and finally became a federal holiday in 1894. It is also a day that “symbolizes” the end of summer for many people in America and is celebrated with parties, parades, etc. It was originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters. At the height of the industrial revolution, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven days a week to be able to sustain a basic living. The idea of Labor Day caught on in other industrial centers across the country and many states passed legislation recognized it but it took them 12 years to make it a holiday. Labor Day is now celebrated in cities and towns across the United States.
