Saint Patrick died in 461 A.D. It was made an official Christian holiday in the early 17th century in order to spread of the Christian religion throughout Ireland. The holiday is celebrated on the day St. Patrick died, March 17. Christians attend church to celebrate St. Patrick each year. During this holiday, people around the world dress in green and participate in festivities. The green shamrock is most commonly used symbol to represent the holiday because St. Patrick used it to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish. Recently the holiday has come under fire because it is claimed it encourages Irish stereotypes about leprechauns and drinking.
