Every year on March 17th, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron Saint of Ireland, eventually became an international festival celebrating Irish culture with different kinds of festivities for people to enjoy. St. Patrick is most known for having driven snakes from Ireland. Different stories tell of him standing on a hill, using a wooden staff to drive them into the sea, banishing them forever from Ireland. While it is true there are no snakes in Ireland, there probably hasn’t had snakes there since the ice age. Many old pagan religions used serpent symbols, leaving his actions to possibly be symbolic of putting an end to the pagan practice.
