Mr. Carrera and Ms. Pizarro hosted the first ever Book Fair Gallery Night on February 12th, in the cafeteria, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mr. Carrera, one of Keys Gate's English and History teachers, planned the event to raise high school students' interest in reading and boost funds for the school's English program. The Class of 2018, Model UN, and other groups and students spent the day preparing for the event, and the effort was not in vain. Throughout the night, parents and students gathered to buy books from the expanded book fair, watched live performances from the student body, and watched one of the night's main events: The Read-a-Thon, an hour-long competition in which students and teachers, read some of the literature's classics out loud. "I can't believe I went head to head with teachers who [read these books] for a living," Jake Gibson, one of four winners of the Read-a-Thon said. By the end of the Gallery Night, the team had raised over $1,000 for their cause. "This was pretty good for our first year," said Ms. Pizarro, in response to the amount of money people gave to support Keys Gate's literature.
